The Film

The Queendemme short film is a brief glimpse into the lives & stories of "Blackness" from a slect handful of creative women in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Initially screened at iconic Arts Commons in 2021, the film is now available for viewing on YouTube.

It specifically highlights 5 artists:

Mary Cheyene (fashion/lifestyle/beauty blogger )

Sinzere (Rapper/Singer/Song-writer)

Justine Tyrell (Rapper/Singer/Song-writer), and

Sabrina Naz Comanescu (Dancer/film-maker)
Sydonne Warren (Painter and muralist)

The documentary features dozens of women in Calgary, and follows an anchoring story arc of 5 women in their "regular creative." These individuals are just a few of the well-respected, innovative creators in the city of Calgary.

The film is a blend of real stories from real creatives, pieced together with honest word compilations from the subjects of the 2019 & 2022 Queendemme photo-series. For the viewer, this film answers questions of "what blackness means" for each of the featured subjects while showcasing brief clips of Calgary.

The content is thought-provoking & may feel relatable for anyone in the very expansive diaspora that *we* believe blackness here is. It speaks to the simultaneous joys & struggles that may coexist as a black artist.

"It's just discovering who you are and being comfortable in your identity.. In your own skin.. And celebrating that every chance you get. That's black womanhood to me."

— Priscille Bukasa,

Spoken word artist & Poet
